My brother in law called me today and said his girlfriend works very  closely with the head of the Mercedes drive technician training program and she may be able to help me with getting into the program if I’m interested, if you know anything about the program or have any insight on working as a Mercedes tech I would really appreciate the chance to talk to you. I live in Atlanta now, I’m a C tech at an independent shop , basically I’m flat rate and I do very simple diagnosis and parts swapping, no tech school and 2.5 years of shop experience

Hey! I’ll start by saying I didn’t go through either the drive or the elite program. I just did a year at wyotech and worked my way to where I am. Also, I don’t deal with hiring so I’m not terribly familiar with drive or elite.

I can say though, that if you go through one of them, and put real effort into getting as much out of it as possible, that you will have a leg up on people that didn’t go through. However, you will not come out and be an automatic A tech getting 30+/hour.

Overall, I love working on Benz. And I’m making a pretty great career out of it. A lot of people do. But every dealership is different. Sometimes you have to jump around a bit until you find a place worth staying.

I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have.

I looked into t he program a lot more and I’m not sure I’m able to move to Florida (the closest training location) for 6 months because I have a lease in Georgia and there is no way I would be able to afford to live in two places at once while going to school during the day, however Its really really difficult to learn everything on the job when you’re working on all makes and models with the limited support of an independent   shop and schooling would make a huge difference in accelerating my career. there are two very high volume Mercedes dealers very close to me right now, RBM and Mercedes of Buckhead and I would love to work at either of them, sadly I think it’s a dream opportunity that came at the wrong time in my life mainly I’m curious wether or not it’s actually a quality program that would help me  or if it’s more of a cash grab for UTI,

It’s absolutely a step above UTI, but won’t do you much good if you don’t work for Benz. Why not try to get into one of the dealers in the meantime? They may be willing to sponsor you to go through drive, if you show enough potential. Is the opportunity you have a time sensitive thing? 6 months isn't that far away.
